Liverpool Airport (Liverpool John Lennon Airport) is based southeast of the city of Liverpool supporting over 1.5 milion passengers per annum flying to destinations acoss the UK and Europe.
During WW1 hoton park was used by the army for training, In 1919, the Royal Flying Corps were stationed at the aerodrome. In 1930 the offcial Liverpool was born as it commenced commercial passnger services. The new terminal building was built in 1939. In 1966 a new runway was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh.
In 1986 the new passenger terminal was built. Liverpool airpot is located about twenty minutes from the city centre of Liverpool, close to the M57. It site on the A561 south of the centre.
Directions
Getting there by Car / Taxi
The airport is closely connected to the M6 via the M56 and the M62, from which the airport is signposted. The best route from the motorways is to head for the A561, and then down Speke Hall Avenue, where the airport is situated. There is a taxi rank at the front of the terminal building.

Getting there by Bus / Coach
Coaches into Liverpool city centre from all over the UK are run by

Getting there by Train
There are several services to Hunt's Cross (the nearest station to the airport) from Liverpool and Manchester. Passengers wishing to travel to or from another destination by train should change at Liverpool or Manchester. Hunt's Cross station is linked to the airport by regular Airlink bus services. - Bureau de change - four of these are run by Travelex and can be found in the main concourse opposite easyjet check in, level 3 by the escalator, the baggage reclaim hall and on the arrivals concourse.

- An ambulift is available on request for assisting disabled passengers with boarding and alighting from the aircraft.
- Wheelchairs are also available on request.
- Reserved disabled parking is available for badge holders.
- Unisex disabled toilets are located on the ground and first floors. Lifts to the first floor will help to access these.
- Low level telephones are also available.
Children
- An amusement arcade (Serendipity Games) can be found in the terminal building, and has a range of games catering for all ages.

History
- First scheduled flight in 1930.
- Official opening in Summer 1933.
- Major construction took place in the 1930s to cope with the growing demand for passenger flights - in particular across the Irish sea.
- First buildings to be built were a passenger terminal and aircraft hangars.
- Hard surface runways were built during WWII to cope with the war aircraft.
- After the war, the airport was owned by the Ministry of Aviation until 1961.
- The local authority then took ownership of the airport and the main runway was extended.
- This runway was opened in 1966, when the airport gained permission for 24 hour flights.
- In the mid '70s, the airport was handed over to Merseyside County Council. When Merseyside County Council was turned into five Merseyside Borough Councils the airport was handed over to these.
- The original 1930s passenger terminal was closed and replaced with a brand new one in 1986.
- In 1990, British Aerospace bought 76% of the airport, making it the first UK airport to be controlled by the private sector.
- By the mid '90s, passenger demand had grown sufficiently enough to warrant extensive renovations and expansion to the passenger lounges and arrivals hall.
- Peel Holdings PLC took control of 76% of the airport in 1997.
Places of Interest : World Heritage City
A further boost to Liverpool was given in July 2004 when Liverpool's Pier Head received World Heritage Site status from UNESCO.
The city's bid was based on Liverpools place in history as a Maritime city and the part it played as a commercial port at the time of the British Empire. The area covered includes the Waterfront, the commercial district, warehouses and merchants' houses.
The site includes the Pier Head, with world-renowned buildings and historic docks such as Stanley Dock, Wapping, Waterloo and Wapping. The Albert Dock has been transformed from a 19th century warehouse to an award winning attraction, housing caf bars restaurants, shops, The Beatles Story, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool Life, Tate Liverpool, Express by Holiday Inn hotel and Albert Dock Premier Lodge.
It started life as far back as 1846 driving the fortunes of the Empire. The dock is next to the Pier Head where a new Cruise ship terminal is proposed.

The Maritime Archive and Library contains one of the finest collections of merchant shipping records in the UK.
Tate Liverpool is one of the largest galleries of modern and contemporary art outside London and is housed in beautiful converted warehouse in the historic Albert Dock.
Part of a family of galleries that include Tate Britain and Tate Modern in London and Tate St Ives in Cornwall, Tate Liverpool is the home of the National Collection of Modern Art in the North.
